Wayne State University (WSU) is Michigan's only urban research university, fulfilling a unique niche in providing access to world-class education and research. It represents one of the three constitutionally autonomous major state universities in Michigan. WAYNE STATE'S 14 schools and colleges offer more than 7,700 courses in greater than 350 academic programs to approximately 33,000 graduate and undergraduate students thus, making WSU the nation's 18th largest university.  Academic programs include 126 bachelor's, 139 master's, 60 doctoral and 32 certificate, specialist and professional programs. University faculty number nearly 1,700 with more than 700 located in the adjacent SCHOOL OF MEDICINE. WSU is ranked in the top 50 nationally among public research universities according to the National Science Foundation and is ranked 17th in the nation in number of graduate degrees conferred per year.

WSU, located approximately two miles north of downtown DETROIT, is situated in the heart of DETROIT'S UNIVERSITY CULTURAL CENTER, the home of renowned museums, galleries and theatres, most within walking distance of the campus. It serves as the intellectual hub of Detroit and as a catalyst for the region's social, cultural, economic and educational enrichment. WSU's main campus encompasses 203 acres of landscaped walkways and gathering spots, linking together 100 education and research buildings. In addition, five extension centers within the metropolitan Detroit area provide convenient access to a wide selection of courses off-site from the main campus.

Wayne State University School of Medicine

 

Founded in 1868, WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE is today, the largest single-campus medical school in the nation with more than 1,000 medical students. In addition, the school has an active graduate program, offering master's degree and PhD programs in 14 areas of basic science to about 400 students annually. As a prominent research university, Wayne State continues to develop and maintain strong graduate and professional programs in many fields. Areas of research excellence within the SCHOOL OF MEDICINE include, Women's and Children's Health, the Neurosciences, and Cancer Biology. The school fosters strong programmatic emphases towards the integration of the basic and clinical sciences through interdisciplinary research and strongly supports investing in those programs that have achieved national recognition while, at the same time, fostering those programs that show promise for the future. Major research facilities of the school are the Gordon Scott Hall of Basic Medical Sciences, the Lande Medical Research Building, the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, the Louis M. Elliman Clinical Research Building and the Hudson-Webber Cancer Research Center.

WSU's SCHOOL OF MEDICINE is affiliated with the hospitals of the Detroit Medical Center, which include Children's Hospital of Michigan, the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, Hutzel Women's Hospital, Harper University Hospital, Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, Sinai-Grace Hospital and Detroit Receiving Hospital. It maintains a research and education partnership with Henry Ford Health Center, in Detroit, and coordinates teaching experiences with 14 community hospitals through the OHEP/WSU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE CONSORTIUM.

According to the AAMC, the school ranks second in the nation for number of medical graduates who decide to stay and practice in the state. About two-thirds of all graduates remain in Michigan, with the majority of them residing in the metropolitan Detroit area. Approximately 40 percent of Michigan practicing physicians have received all or part of their training from the WSU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.
